
Four Portland area artists explore the book format including its narrative and sculptural potential. Sarah Horowitz, Angela Katona Batchelor, Diane Jacobs, and Barb Tetenbaum each approach the book medium through specific conceptual frameworks, which begin both in nature and within the artificial constructs of the book itself.

CODEX is a prestigious book fair that draws artisans from all the Americas, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand and limits itself to 135 tables. I will showcase my editioned books, one-of-a-kind books, and broadsides at the Book Fair located on the UC Berkeley campus. The works in this exhibition explore the Magna Carta's ideals while focusing on contemporary issues--from the protection of personal freedom and individual rights, to unlawful imprisonment; from the Abu Ghraib torture atrocities and Japanese bondage techniques, to the resilience of religious dogmas and the visual codification of legal systems in medieval textile patterns. The artists involved hail from many countries, including Germany, Japan, Italy, Israel, The Netherlands, and across the United States.
